You always leave the best treat for last, right? Hotel 626 wakes you up in the middle of the night and sends you tumbling down the dark rabbit hole of a haunted hotel. You’ll have to get past possessed toddlers, photophobic maids, and more than a couple of murderous madmen if you want to see the morning light.
It’s point-and-click with a twist – all the scenes are live action. Hotel 626 plays like an interactive movie, but there are actual puzzles involved rather than choosing the path to the next reel. Live action really adds something extra creepy to the game. When trying to blind the maid with your camera, you really have to listen for her as she scurries around the dark room. Miss the shot and you’ll get a fleeting picture of what you actually shot in the camera.
But like any good haunted house, the game is super cheesy. I mean, it’s a game sponsored by a particular brand of corn chip that just happens to come in cool ranch flavor. If you go into the game with an open mind, you find some great ideas behind the worn out rubber masks of other horror games. Users with cameras connected will find that the game takes a quick picture of you without you knowing about it. Don’t be surprised to find your picture mixed in with the live action scenes. Enable the microphone and you’ll have to sing the little ghoul to sleep. You can also choose to go without and not lose much in the total experience. Even waiting for the sun to go down is just apart of the fun.
Hotel 626 pushes you through quickly without ever holding you back. A missed puzzle is just another good scare waiting in the wings. Players can also jump around to each of the puzzles after you finish if you just want to try your hand at finding the solution. Quick, easy, and costing you less than a bag of chips (to the tune of "free), Hotel 626 holds a few of scares and fun puzzles if you dare to brave the hallways.
