February 15th, 1495

As you progress through world, encountering the dangers at sea, making great discoveries, or becoming a trading power house, it isn’t a feat you should manage alone. Certainly you can travel with a Company or a Fleet, but also as you attain certain Milestones, you can hire Aides to assist you in your adventures. They can back you up in various roles, with their support skills, or just to keep you company as you travel. Capt's Logbook: Communicating

Captain Anjel's Log                                - by David "AnjelusX" Slauenwhite

February 10th, 1495

The oceans of the world are vast, but even when there is no one on the horizon, we do not sail alone. There is a plethora of ways to communicate with other voyagers as we make our ways through the adventures, trials, and discoveries within the world. Look over them, there are many to be used and perhaps a few that would be good to have additionally. Taking a closer look is the theme of this entry, for even though we might spend our days at sea alone moving towards our own goals and achieving our own fame.

Capt's Logbook: Crafting and You

Captain Anjel's Log
- by David "AnjelusX" Slauenwhite

January 24th 1495

Ahoy, I’ve written quite a bit so far on my various voyages and the many things I’ve learned. I’ve tried my hand at various jobs, gone exploring for treasure, battled pirates, and engaged in trade. During my turn building ships and preparing to make for the New World, I’ve also dabbled in the diverse experience that is crafting. One of the more expansive systems to be involved in there are several avenues of getting your hands dirty and making items for your own benefit or for sale to others. Taking a cue from what I’ve seen other voyagers accomplish and my own experimenting, I found that crafting can be rewarding not only in building items I might otherwise have to search town after town for. Crafting is also a lucrative way to make some money while I’m in port on shore leave.

To begin with there are several forms of crafting, from simple food production to the making of weapons, clothing, cannons, figureheads, and of course general items. While in the beginning, the items might not be noteworthy or really profitable. With persistence and determination, you can achieve levels of skill to begin making some decent and eventually really good gear. Even at the start, making food might not be profitable, it certainly helps to keep your Vigour replenished so you can continue to craft and level your crafting skills.

Cooking Guide

Cooking Guide

Introduction
Cooking has always been on of my favourite crafting skills in UWO. On my old server i made hundreds of millions selling items such as Seafood Pizza and Garlic Chicken and the best thing about cooking is that there will always be a demand, regardless of where the server is at. Each guild requires a good cook or two, and if you are interested in pursuing this path here is a simple guide.

Recommended birth place
-Lisbon
-Amsterdam

Portuguese and Dutch players will have the easiest times starting out as chefs due to fact that their ports nearby stock up on all the items required for cooking, and being Portuguese or Dutch would allow them to buy extra ingredients at lower price.

With the introduction of the animal trader job, the food merchant is very much made redundant. The animal trader favours all the essential skills required for cooking, so when you are ready, change your job into an Animal Trader

Update: Builders of Ship

Another new update of Anjel's Captain Logbook, Builders of Ship. A must read for anyone out there who's interested in ship building.

First and foremost, preparing to enter the craft of Shipbuilding takes some work on your part. You need to build up some knowledge of ship repair before you can hope to start building even the simplest of vessels. You can achieve this in a variety of ways of course. For some they charge into battle, with cannons blazing and repair any damage done by scurvy pirates bent on sinking you. For others, they sail the seas in search of storms to ride their way through, repairing as they go. This can be effective in a degree however finding storms aren’t exactly the most pleasurable experience. For others, like myself, I chose to do the more humorous route and ram my ship into land repeatedly. Getting my crew and I drunk on rum at the local tavern made this a much more enjoyable experience and my crew found the whole thing rather funny, when they weren’t scared to death thinking we’d sink!

You can read the whole story in Here.

Update: Day in the life of Merchant

Another captain logbook entry of Anjelus. Kindly read the "Day in the life of Merchant."
Here's a brief introduction to it..

Captain Anjel's Log                                - by David "AnjelusX" Slauenwhite

January 4, 1495

Happy New Year friends and companions, times change and while there is a time when you have to fight, and there are times when you can track through the wilds; there are also the need for money to fund your adventures and battles. For myself, I’ve found that if I want to really succeed on the seas I must learn art that is trade. There are many ways for an enterprising merchant to make real money plying the waters of the world. Buying and selling goods from port to port, keeping a keen eye on the markets to find the best deals and to know what’s selling high where and what isn’t worth purchasing until the market changes.

more of that here.

UWO Investment FAQ

The following Q & A's are from UWO's forum posted by smartin4123 and was answered by darthfiend. This will just clarify some questions regarding the investing in towns. Hope this will help some players out there who are still confuse about investments.

Will investing in a city lower the cost I pay for goods in that city (trade goods or otherwise)? Does the city's allegiance matter?

if the port is owned by your nation you pay less on the tariffs for buying and selling in that port.
in addition, the top 5 investors there get additional tax breaks and can see items before others (through development)

Will investing in a city increase the amount of trade goods I can buy in that city? Does the city's allegiance matter?

The total % of influence your nation has in a port equates to you being able to purchase more items in that port.
For example i was buying hemp in amsterdam with a friend, we had the same fabric trading skill, but because england has 0% influence in amsterdam and the dutch have 100% he was able to buy 140 hemp compared to my 70.

Is there anywhere I can see how much development a city needs to reach the next level?

Anything you read on the developments will most likely be innacurate, i believe the development numbers were changed to compensate for a lower player base (compared to the Korean and Japanese servers).
I have yet to read anything that was truely accurate on the dev levels.

Do investments that count to a city's development level need to come from the country it's allied with?

No, there are some ports however that only certain a single nation can invest in. to check you can simply hover your mouse over a port on the map (press "M").
If the port reads as an allied country, it can be taken. if it reads as a territory it can only be invested in by the nation it belongs too, and can never be flipped.

How does an allied city switch allegiance? Do any and all investments made in that city count towards it's allegiance or only in certain cases?

When you click the investment status at any city official you can see the %'s of influence, all invests count towards that influence.
You only need to change the influence by half a percent over then leading nation to claim it.

Is allegiance even the right term to refer to which country a city is allied with?
I prefer the word control, as in "who controls hamburg right now?" it seems to be the standard word in game when your talking about which flag a port has.

Crafting Guides: Handicraft II

North Sea Chapter

Required Skill Books
Art Handbook (Cairo, reward after 400,000D in Investment)
Book of Additional Wood Armour (all six capital cities) 15000D
Book of Alloy Smelting [optional] (Dublin, reward after 300,000 in investment)
Brewing Secrets [optional] (Cagliari, reward after 320,000D in investment; Hamburg) 10000D
Brewing Secrets Volume 2 [optional] (Havana, Montpellier, reward after 800,000 in investment)

-Required Skills
Industrial good trading (mineral trader)
Handicraft (medicine trader)
Ore trading [optional] (mineral trader)
Casting [Level 7+] [optional] (mineral trader, firearms trader)
Alcohol trading [optional] (accountant)
Luxury items trading [optional] (accountant, medicine trader)

Level 1 – 3 (Lumber + Iron >>> Cedar Boards)
Although, casting is not essential, having casting at level 7 and being able to make Bronze would make the levelling up of Handicraft 10 or more times faster. For details on how to level up Casting, see my guide on Casting. The reason is that you can turn Bronze into Bronze statue and the materials to make Bronze can all be found in Hamburg.
If you wish to master Handicraft and you are from either England or Netherlands, it is highly recommended that you start off with Casting and use Handicraft as a complement rather than head straight into Handicraft.
Purchase as many Iron from Amsterdam as you can and then sail to Oslo. In Oslo combine Lumber with Iron to make Cedar Boards from the Book of Additional Wood Armour.

Level 3 - 5 (Lumber >>> Wooden statue)
The recipe book required for making Wooden Statue is obtained from Cairo. It is best to ask a friend from a Mediterranean nation to bring the book for you. It is a very long travel from Cairo back to the North.
Wooden Statues will sell for quite a lot in Oslo, and this recipe can make you rich very quickly. The disadvantage is that Oslo has no close by ports, so you will have to buy Lumber from other players.

Level 5 – 8 (Copper Ore + Tin Ore >>> Bronze: Bronze >>> Bronze statue)
Bronze can be purchased from ports, but it is much quicker if you use level 7 casting skill and the Book of Alloy Smelting, obtained from 300,000D in investments in Dublin to produce Bronze from Copper Ore and Tin Ore, which are both available in Hamburg.
In this method you can level up your Casting as well as your Handicraft, and you don’t have to leave port.

Level 8 – 10 (Copper Ore + Tin Ore >>> Bronze: Bronze >>> Bronze Statue or Raisin >>> Wine, 2 x Wine >>> Brandy, Brandy + Raisin >>> Shelly)

Path A (Copper Ore + Tin Ore >>> Bronze: Bronze >>> Bronze Statue)
You can craft Bronze Statues until you reach level 10. You will make a lot of Ducats, but the monotony might kill you.

Path B (Raisin >>> Wine, 2 x Wine >>> Brandy, Brandy + Raisin >>> Shelly)
You can also use the method discussed earlier in the Mediterranean Chapter to make Shelly in Bordeaux/Nantes areas.

Level 10
See late game

Crafting Guides: Handicraft I

Originally written by and produced by MTC and her leaders.

Introduction

Handicraft has always been one of my favourite crafting skills, because of its versatility. It can be coupled with other major crafting skills such as Cooking and Casting and significantly shorten the time to level the other two skills. It can also be complemented with skills such as Procurement and Collection, and therefore turning trash items such as Grass, Sand and Stone into highly valuable commodity.
Handicraft can be used to make trade goods such as alcohol, as well as make Gems from ore collected in Landing areas. It is also responsible for making all furniture throughout the game, and can add valuable boosts to your ship by building Head Pieces and Wooden Armours
Because Handicraft is such a versatile, each nation will have its advantages and disadvantages. Spanish players and Portuguese players will have easy access to, Wheat, Barley, Olives, Cane, Almond, and Wine, French players will have the Bordeaux to Nantes trade route as well as access to the Brewing Secrets Volume 2 from Montpellier, and Dutch and English players will have the raw materials of Lumber and other metal ore and Industrial goods from the North Sea.
